Organizing Your Closet Like a Pro

Almost everyone has a closet or two that is in desperate need of organization. Things tossed in with no rhyme or reason; clothes unorganized to the point where you don’t even know what you have. You’ve probably got whole outfits that you’ve forgotten about, strictly because they’re stuffed in an unorganized closet. Maybe you don’t have room in your closet to store your shoes in an organized fashion, so you simply toss them in, in a heap. Well now you can have that organized closet you’ve always wanted, but didn’t know where, or how to start, to get it organized.

Your closet makeover:

1. The Removal – The first step is to remove everything from your closet. Set it all out of the closet to give you room to work in there. In the process of emptying your closet, this is a good time to go through what you have. Now you’ll be able to see what you want to keep, and what you want to discard – maybe a trip to the Goodwill, or perhaps a trip to the dumpster.
2. Measuring – With an empty closet, measuring is much easier. With a tape measure; measure your closet. Find out the depth of your closet, and the length. You’ll need to know this for adding new storage devices: new shelving, new hanging poles (if you need or want them), as well as storage bins, of different sizes. One thing you don’t want; is to get the wrong sizes of anything, including the storage bins. Choosing the wrong sized storage bins can cramp your closet. The wrong-sized containers can also prevent your closet door(s) from closing all the way. This will make your closet look untidy; not to mention, it can also be frustrating to not be able to close your closet door(s) all the way. And who needs that frustration?
3. Install New Storage Devices – With the correct tools, follow the instructions to install your new storage devices; hanging poles, and shelving units or devices. Be sure they are installed correctly, securely, and evenly. Having an uneven hanging bar is not only unattractive, but can be a strain on your wall, and cause problems with hanging clothes straight. Install your new shelving units the same way; under manufacturer’s instructions. Always be sure to check measurements before and during installation.
4. Organize Storage Bins – Getting organized with storage bins, means you’ll need to spend some time going through your collection of clothes and shoes. As you pack your shoes into a bin, this can be your second chance to really eliminate what you don’t want or need. Make a “Goodwill pile” and start adding. They will appreciate what you donate, and you will lighten your closet load, leaving room for what you really need and want. You don’t want to overuse storage bins, so organize in a way where you can have a bin for such things as; belts, scarves, and your collection of purses. Another bin or two for shoes. A third bin can be for sweaters. Then neatly stack them in the closet on the floor and out-of-the-way. If you have plenty of shelving space, you may want to store them on a shelf. It‘s a good idea to label the bins so you know what exactly is in each one, without having to go through each one to get what you want.
5. Hang Your Clothes – Organize your hanging clothes. However you choose to organize them; whether you prefer color coded, clothes by season, or by item, however you prefer, organize to where they work and make sense to you. You want things easy-to-find and easy-to-see. Hang them up with your hangers of choice – wired or plastic. Personally, I prefer plastic hangers of different thickness. The fatter, chunkier hangers are great for pants, and jackets or coats. The thinner plastic hangers are perfect for tops and sweaters, you prefer hung. Wire hangers are just notorious for leaving creases in your clothes; which sometimes, can be nearly impossible to remove. Some can even rust over time, leaving a rust stain on your clothing.

The more you plan ahead, the easier your closet reorganization project will go. With so many organizational tools and pieces; with a little planning, you can have the closet of your dreams.
